Origin of Maha Mrityunjay Mantra

As per Hindu mythology, Mrityunjay, means the One who has conquered Death.

Lord Shiva is the only Indian god who is called as “Maha Mrityunjaya” in Indian ancient scriptures.

This mantra was created by Rishi Markandeya who was a  devotee of Lord Shiva. He came to know from his father that he was having short life of 16 years. Hence to fully surrender himself before the Mahadev, he created this mantra and started chanting it.

When the Death God – Lord Yama came to take his life, he was repelled by the mighty divine force Lord Shiva and thrown out. Lord Shiva came to rescue Rishi Markandeya from Death and extended his life.

Lord Shiva himself revealed this mantra to Maharishi Vashishtha  as Sanjeevani Vidya or the art of resurrection. Later Sage Vashishtha composed Rigveda, as ancient Vedic literature and Mrityunjaya mantra is found in Verse number 7.59.12.

Maha Mrutyunjaya Mantra is also known as the Rudra Mantra or Tryambakam Mantra, because it is created to pray the almighty Lord Shiva.

In Bhagwad Gita (9.34 and 18.65), Lord Krishna mentions that chanting of mantras is like offering prayers to the Supreme Lord.

And as per old Indian literatures Maha Mrytyunjaya is the only mantra which has been chanted since ages by billions of people.

That is why it is called MAHA MANTRA or MAHA MRITYUNJAYA MANTRA.

It is a belief since ancient times that Lord Shiva is the most Jagrut (alive and active) deity on this earth, who comes to rescue immediately from all misfortunes as and when you call him for help.

Hence Maha Mrityunjay Mantra is said to be the most powerful mantra of Lord Shiva.
