Also, the most important part of this was, the Mantra was chanted in temple by pandits which was many kilometers away from the patients.
Who created the Mahamrityunjay Mantra?
The Mahamrityunjay mantra, also known as Rudra mantra, was created by Rishi Markandeya in satyuga. He was born to Rishi Mrikandu, who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. Pleased by his hard penance and worship, Lord Shiva, blessed Rishi Mrikandu with a boon, where he had a choice to get long-lived ordinary son or short-lived genius son. Rishi Mrikandu preferred the genius son.
Little did he realised that time flies without giving rebound. But when Markandeya crossed his teen age, Rishi Mrikandu realised his mistake and repented a lot. He was not ready to accept that one day his son would have to go back to heaven. He lost his sleep and peace forever.
Markandeya, though a small boy, did not fail to notice the tension in his father’s eyes. After lot of efforts, he persuaded his father to reveal the real reason of his despair. Knowing that he was near his death, Rishi Markandya, composed a mantra to call for a help from the almighty Shiva.
Markanteya started chanting Mahamrityunjay Mantra ceaselessly. He forgot that Yama’s dutas (death god’s soldiers) had come to snatch his pran (life). But as the dutas approached Markandeya, they were repelled by some invisible force around Markandeya. When after lots of efforts they could not take life, they realised that it is not in their power, so better called the Yama himself to do this task.
So, they went back to Lord Yama (the death god). He got furiated to know about this and decided to come himself to take Markendeya’s pran. Yama warned Markandeya and tried to snatch his pran from his body. But Markandeya, tightly hugged Shiv-linga and kept continuously chanting Mahamrityunjay Mantra.
Bursted with anger, Yama ran on Markandeya. But he fell on the ground as if he was pushed by force. It was Lord Shiva, who got erupted like lava from volcano and started beating Yama mercilessly. Yama realised that he made Lord Shiva angry by his stupid actions on Markandeya. He apologised for his behaviours and sought unconditional mercy from Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva forgave him and asked him to give life forever to his devotee Markandeya.
Thus, pleased by the devotion and dedication of Markandeya, Lord Shiva protected him from Yama (the god of death) and extended his life!
